Caprylyl glycol (Octiol) is preferably used for its strong antimicrobial activity. It acts independently of the pH value. Together with phenethyl alcohol, Multifunctional 1388 ECO, or potassium sorbate, it can be used to replace conventional preservatives in emulsions. Nevertheless, thanks to its hydrating and refatting properties, caprylyl glycol (optional) is considered to be extremely kind to the skin. Caprylyl glycol (octiol) is present as a clear, almost colorless liquid at temperatures above 30 °C. At temperatures below 30 °C, it is solid. At temperatures below 30 °C, it is solid. It can be mixed with the aqueous or oil phase at any stage of the manufacturing process. However, it is preferred to be dissolved in the aqueous phase at higher temperatures (~ 75°C). It can tolerate the high temperatures of the emulsion process. Caprylyl glycol (Octiol) is suitable for emulsions, but also for shampoos, shower gels, or hydroalcoholic products. It is soluble in surfactant-based products. However, when used in clear, aqueous, or hydroalcoholic products, solubilizers are recommended. It should be noted that Caprylyl Glycol (Octiol) may affect the emulsion system and reduce the viscosity of the formulation due to its surface active property.
