From the roots of the vetiver, an Asian sweet grass, the vetiver oil (botan. name: Vetiveria zizanioides) is distilled with the help of steam. Its distinctive balsamic, earthy-woody scent makes the somewhat viscous, brownish oil an indispensable base note. Because of the high intensity of the scent, vetiver oil should be used diluted. A 10% solution of the natural vetiver oil in alcohol is recommended.
